The 2005 Matchplay Championship Final was played between Christoforos Christophorou and Paris Panayides. After a hard fought battle throughout the match Paris finally managed to overcome Christoforos' resistance and win the title by a 3 and 2. Congratulations to Paris on winning the title of the Nicosia Golf Club Matchplay Champion 2005. Well done Paris.
In mid-2005 NGC approached Strovolos Municipal Council with a view of obtaining permission to look for a suitable site and propose a plan for the establishment of a Golf Driving Range in the Municipality. Following encouraging feedback from the Council, NGC identified a suitable site and prepared a proposal for a golf range. This was first presented to the Municipal Council and then jointly with the Mayor of Strovolos Mr. Iliofotou, presented to the Presidesnt of Cyprus Sports Organization (KOA), Mr. Christofides.
We are currently in an advanced stage of preparation for a final and official plan to be presented to both the Municipal Strovols Council and KOA.
If our application is successful we plan to start building the range as soon as all relevant permissions are granted and finances secured.
The Committee appointed Constantinos Kapodistrias as NGC's Press Officer. Constantinos is now responsible for all press releases relating to NGC. All Competition results are now released to the Press by Constantinos and a number of local papers now publish NGC results and shorts editorials following competitions on a regular basis..
Following a captaincy of nearly 7 years, NGC's long standing Captain, Nick Rossides, resigned his post in order to fill the vacated post of Secretary General of Cyprus Golf Federation. The new NGC Captain is now George Ioannides. George was the acting Vice-Captain and due to take over the Captaincy from Nick in January 2006. The new Vice-Captain is Christoforos Christophorou.
Paris Panayides has won the individual trophy of the MIE Cyprus Golf Cup organized by Limassol Golf Club, that was held at Aphrodite Hills G.C. on September 18, 2005. Paris' impressive score of 37 points in windy and difficult conditions was by 3 points better of his nearest rival with 34 points. Total field was 114 players. Congratulations to Paris who has made Nicosia Golf Club proud!!!
The MIE Cyprus Golf Cup was a team event for all Cyprus golf clubs, with a field of 10 players each. All clubs were represented including the Turkish Cypriot Cyprus Mediterranean Coast G.C. The exception was Vikla G.C. who dropped out due to internal reasons. The competition was Stableford format off full handicap with the best 7 scores of each team counting. NGC with a number of notable absentees fielded a team of eight consisting of Demetris Papapetrou, Uta Papapetrou, Nick Rossides, George Ioannides, Paris Panayides, Sylvia Loizides, Vasos Toouli and Peter Mele. Fifth place over-all was more than we hoped for before the competition begun. Next year's competition is scheduled for September 17, 2006. With Paris in our ranks and a strong squad we have every reason to be optimistic for next year!!!!
